“We can only be said to be alive when our hearts are conscious of our treasures.”
– Thornton Wilder
Today’s Treasures
sunlit morning
quiet house
daddy asleep on pure one’s floor
hands on her cheek
no fever
i open scripture
ears to hear admonition:
“live in thanksgiving daily”
boys at my breast
brothers clasping hands
warm breath
laughing eyes
flattering smiles
they know me
beautiful one comes to snuggle
brings me fruit leather
sassy girl kisses my face
curly top whispers “i love you”
blond ringlets bouncing
four girls wait under mistletoe
husband’s strong hands –
he holds us all
chest to mine
i wear new brown shoes
my brother answers “bon jour”
i smell mom’s kitchen
sisters baking
dad’s shrimp cocktail
family prayer – my sweetheart’s voice
he is the calm in my storm
sister in law – her hands hold and feed
grandparents serve, fuss and love
one red amaryllis to pot and bloom
big star-splashed sky
half a moon
tired children
clean toy room
folded laundry
knees touch for evening prayer
i say jesus’ name
remember miracles
notice mercies
