I’m over at Segullah today blogging about this.
And this.
And the wondrous discovery we made in our backyard.
We’ve been picking, slicing, savoring, and sharing.
If you live local, come on by. We have more than enough to go around.
And if you have the slightest poetic ear, come on over to Segullah and join the discussion of this “parable.” Several metaphors are at work there. I’d love to hear your insights.
Melissa:
Loved it Cath. It's funny, a similar thing happened to me this year, too (but it didn't occur to me until I read your article). With my calling and Sam's calling and various jobs, I wasn't able to make time for a garden this spring. I was so disappointed, because I always at least plant tomatoes.
Then early in the summer, as I was weeding, I notice 4 tomato plants sprouting spontaneously, out of the ground.
Ada was with me when I discovered it, and I said to her, "It's a blessing. It's a miracle and a little treat from Heavenly Father."
The next Sunday, Ada was learning about Jesus and some of the miracles He performed. She confidently said, "Oh, I know about miracles… we've had miracles" – and told the class our tomato story.
So the blessing of the tomatoes bore even greater fruit in Ada's heart and I was so grateful that I didn't have the time this year, that I could see what He could do, when I couldn't.
This is long (sorry), but your story illustrates why I felt the way about my situation so well. Thanks for sharing, and reminding me how blessed we are. And always, the writing is so lovely.

Although it sounds strange, we are going to miss our driveway here, it is lined with Blackberry bushes and a great big crab apple tree. Today Dave made the second batch of Crabapple blackberry jelly this weekend. I'd send you some if I thought it would survive the trip. I love "living" off the land!

Melissa – I would love it if you'd post your anecdote over at Segullah so other readers could benefit from your experience. Please?

These lines are too good not to share. Loved every word. Thank you Melissa.
Michelle – I can just picture your drive. I never thought of using crabapples for anything! We have a tree out front. Do you recommend it for jelly? And as for the jelly – it's the thought that counts, right? 🙂

The jelly is awesome but it takes a LOT of cutting and time. If you are interested, I'll have Dave send you his recipe.

Thanks so much for letting us come and play last night. We really enjoyed it! I love your parable and am so grateful that even when I'm not at my best, Heavenly Father still blesses me.

Michelle – I may have to pass on the jelly for now. I barely have time to cut my kids food for lunch!
Mary – we LOVED having you! Thank YOU! And you make a good point – God accepts our best efforts. Aren't we grateful?
Erin – I know! That's what I think when I see your cute boys? Where has the time gone??? Miss you. Can we hook up some time when you're in UT?
