During the morning, we get our jobs done. These charts have worked extremely well. The girls are getting better and more efficient as the days go by. Included is a daily reading and writing goal and the girls do a few pages from their summer bridge workbook.
That leaves afternoons or late mornings (if the kids are motivated) open for a daily focus. Cleverly brainstormed (not by me) with an alliteration so moms and kids don’t forget. Here’s our first week of summer.
Make It Monday
Mondays we make, build, or craft something. This week we made fairy dolls, in anticipation for Eliza’s fairy party. Good thing we tried these in advance. I now know we will NOT be making them at the party. Fairy gardens will be enough. And I couldn’t get the glue gun to work so we didn’t put on wings or acorn hats, but Eliza opted for the crazy hair-do anyhow.
While making these dolls, I got a message from my friend April – wonderful April with Power of Moms. She was driving through our area, an unusual thing since she lives in California, and wondered if she could stop by. Talk about abandoning a plan for something more opportunistic.
A chance to see April? Absolutely! I put dinner prep on hold, let the girls make messy peanut butter toast and let the boys nap long, while April and I visited. April, your impromptu visit made my day. You are radiant in every way, and you’re doing so much good for mothers around the world. Thank you dear friend.

LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS!
I want to be more focused- this is fabulous! thanks for sharing!!
Gretchen
I love this too! Thanks for the inspiration…I'm excited to implement some of these ideas.
Tara
Love this post. I couldn't agree more. I'm a big fan of the Power of Moms ideas as well.
I think Fill a Need Friday is a terrific idea! I am trying to do the governor's Summer of Service with my five year old so I would love any service with little one ideas you have! So far we have been picking up litter on trails, making meals for neighbors, and helping elderly with projects.

Cath, you are stinkin' amazing! We organized a neighborhood "Summer of Service" a few years ago, where we did service projects with dozens of neighbor kids each week. It was a huge undertaking, but so memorable!
Sounds like your summer will be so memorable as well. 🙂
love you.

Chanel – I didn't realize a daily focus would be so helpful, but it's really been the highlight of our summer so far. Hope you are well sweet lady!
Gretchen – Want to hear how it goes if you decide to implement – would love to hear your ideas.
Tara – sounds like I need to glean ideas from YOU! Love the bracelet idea and all the other compassionate things in which you've involved your daughter. I'll post more ideas as we go along – still searching for good options. Thank you for the wonderful link. Darling blog.
My Dear Brod – how are you?? I think of you all the time. Would love to know what kind of service projects you did during that summer of service. I could use some ideas. Want to see your face and know how you are. love you too!

Our summerbreak is only nine weeks long (far too short, if you ask me, because I could so get used to this, ;-)), and even though it hasn't even started yet, I feel as if it's already slipping away: The kids and I are going to Italy for a week (which was a completely spontaneous idea: I just happened to see there was an apartment available… and booked it), the whole family is going up to the mountains for two weeks, my sun wants to take take a class in archery and wrestling, and my oldest daughter will try out a few sports classes… and there we go… With all this, we are already having a hard time coordinating a camping trip with our friends, ;-).
But I like you idea with the planning, and can see how it makes life much, much easier with much more to look forward to. We will, by the way, try out your way to eat an orange — looks like fun.
And after looking at your pictures: Utah seems like a wonderful and interesting place, too bad, I never went.
One question: somewhere in the world wide web I saw a blog with an instruction on how to make a fun home made squirt gun, and given it was an American blog, I thought that maybe I found the link in your blog… Any idea?
Take care and enjoy your Making Monday!
So long,
Corinna

Ha ha, Freudian slip: My "son", not my "sun", ;-).

Sorry, not intending to spam your blog, ;-). But here's something I found for your wet wednesdays or making mondays:

The text is in German but the pictures are self-explanatory.
But if someone does have an instruction for a home made squirt gun, I'd love to read about it!
So long,

Corinna – a week in Italy? How wonderful! Good for you! Your summer sounds like it will be full of great memories. You must visit Utah some time. It's a beautiful place. As for the home made squirt gun, it wasn't here. But I'll do some googling to see what I can find.
And thanks for the bubble idea. Great fun! (And also the book recommendations.) I will see if I can find them at the library! Thank you!!
Tracy
Oh my word I love this so much!!! I'm such a planner too and my kids LOVE a good plan. xo
Becca
I've been loving this idea. We seem to be best at make-it Mondays, and our crafts and water activities for Wednesdays somehow creep into the rest of the week. My boys love the squirt guns! We'd love to join you on any of your Tuesday trips if you're up for it. We will be traveling from Rexburg this coming Tuesday, but will be around after that. Let me know. Love you!
Just FYI – we made chalkboards, sculpted clay, have been to the zoo, red rock canyon in Vegas, swimming, water ballooning, splash pads, and the library. I'd love some more ideas.

Where are the shorelands that you visited?
catharvy
It's the Great Salt Lake Shorelands. Natural Preserve. North of Salt Lake City. Off the beaten path a bit. Directions below:
