It was June. Our family of seven crowded around the candles… and blew. Spencer and Gordon were one year old! Beyond the regular birthday fanfare, this celebration was a big hurrah for survival.
I watched the boys race through the kitchen – crawling in tandem – their little bottoms swiveling with speed and I smiled gratitude. We survived one whole year with “five under five” and we’re still standing. A little off-balance and slumped over, but standing. Any twin parent will tell you – “the first year is the hardest.”
We opened presents. A sock monkey-in-the-box, race track from the girls, and ride-on giraffes from Grandma Nae and Poppa Jim.
Footballs from Dad. Spencer’s a pretty good catch.
Then we finished with the traditional cake bash. A huge piece of cake for each boy to tackle on his own. They didn’t waste much time.

I adore your family. Sometime, soon, we are getting together.

Michelle – I was just thinking of you the other day. We need to plan a dinner date. Maybe in August?
I loved your Hotel Cali post. I think I know your sister.

I love 1 year olds, they are so cute and cuddly. I love that the communication barrier starts to lift as words are formed and minds are opened. Congrats on making it through the first year! Oh – and I actually thought it was a leaf until you told me otherwise.

I cannot believe it has already been a year. They are so cute. My little Jonathan has that same outfit in green. I love it in blue, wish I had both. You are amazing btw. I don't know how you do it and make it look so great.

Shells – You're right. This is a delightful time. They are making decisions, modeling sounds. It's so much fun! And I'll pass your leaf comment on to Doug! We could have used some Younce expertise in the cake department.
Meesh – Too funny. When I bought those outfits for the boys I thought, "These are SO Bridge!" Looks like I know my Bridge style… Thanks for your sweet comment.

Congrats on making it through the first year! My first five were born in five years (but only one set of twins =)) and I have to tell you how WONDERFUL and fun and exciting it is now that they are ages 11 down to 6. They'll all be in school full-time this year and I find myself wondering what I'm going to do with myself with just 3 at home.
I'm so glad I stumbled on your blog. Good luck to you and your beautiful family.
Angie
